Manuel Baum Praises Augsburg After 2-2 Draw With Bayern Munich
Augsburg emerged from a gripping 2-2 Bavarian derby with Bayern Munich encouraged by both the point and the manner in which it was earned, with head coach Manuel Baum praising a collective display that preserved the club’s place in fourth after the international break.
Baum had demanded belief and high intensity before kick-off, and his players delivered a disciplined performance against the champions. He declined to single out an individual after the final whistle, insisting the result had been built by the whole group.
“There is no one player to pick out today,” Baum said. “We were strong as a collective.”
The Augsburg coach was especially satisfied with his side’s response after Ismael Saibari brought Bayern level. Rather than allowing the momentum to swing decisively towards the visitors, Augsburg regained the advantage when Rodrigo Ribeiro reacted quickest to a loose ball after a rebound.
“What impressed me most was that we did not collapse after their first equaliser and instead responded,” Baum said. “I am proud of the players and of the entire stadium.”
Robin Fellhauer, one of Augsburg’s scorers, accepted that Bayern’s four ruled-out goals meant fortune had played a role in the final result. Even so, he felt Augsburg’s effort over the 90 minutes justified their reward.
“We can certainly be happy with a point against Bayern,” Fellhauer said. “Given how the match developed, perhaps there was also some luck involved. But the team gave everything on the pitch, and that is why we deserved the point.”
Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen echoed that assessment, praising the commitment shown by the home side while acknowledging the fine margins involved against opposition of Bayern’s quality.
“We gave everything, although you need a little luck as well,” Dahmen said. “In the end, we are happy with the point.”
Augsburg maintain strong start
The draw extends Augsburg’s encouraging opening to the campaign and leaves them fourth in the league standings. Their ability to trouble Bayern is not new: Augsburg won in Munich last season, and the latest meeting again showed Baum’s side can make life difficult for the champions through organisation, intensity and resilience.
With the international break now behind them, Augsburg will seek to carry that level of application into the next round of league fixtures. Baum’s tactical approach has continued to bring results for the Fuggerstädter, and the Bayern draw offers further evidence that their early position is being sustained by more than momentum alone.
