Manchester United urged to stay patient with 15-year-old prospect JJ Gabriel

Manchester United are expected to take a measured approach with academy prospect Gabriel despite mounting attention around the 15-year-old, who will become eligible to move fully into the senior set-up when he turns 16 on October 6.

Gabriel’s route towards senior football

Gabriel has been one of the standout names in United’s youth system and has already attracted comparisons that bring considerable expectation. The teenager has even been labelled “Kid Messi”, although the focus at Old Trafford will be on allowing him to progress without placing undue pressure on him.

He appeared as a substitute in United’s pre-season meeting with Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, setting a club mark as the youngest player used in an unofficial fixture. A competitive first-team appearance was not possible last season because of Premier League registration rules for players of his age.

United’s early exits from both domestic cup competitions also removed potential opportunities for Gabriel to feature in knockout football. His 16th birthday in October will remove the age-related obstacle and make a senior involvement possible during the 2026-27 season.

Former players urge patience

Andy Cole believes Gabriel has the ability to reach the first team but warned that a Premier League introduction must come at the appropriate moment. The 1999 Treble winner stressed that the youngster remains at a very early stage of his development and still has much to learn.

Cole said Gabriel’s talent is clear, but maintained that the player should simply continue his current work until the coaching staff decide he is ready. He did not expect an immediate breakthrough to be guaranteed, either this season or in the near future.

Lee Sharpe also backed a cautious plan, pointing to the senior professionals and staff around Michael Carrick as important figures in the teenager’s development. Sharpe suggested brief late appearances could become an option this season, but said a first-team step next year would be equally understandable given Gabriel is still only 15.

Sharpe warned against exposing the forward too soon, particularly in matches where he could be targeted physically or lose confidence after a difficult early experience. The priority, he said, is to manage both his minutes and the timing of any debut.

Kai Rooney continues academy progress

Gabriel is not the only young player drawing interest at United. Kai Rooney, the eldest son of the club’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, is another academy forward seeking a route to Old Trafford. The powerful striker has been described as possessing traits similar to those of his father.

Cole said football regularly produces unexpected stories when asked whether another Rooney could one day lead United’s attack, but added that the situation can only be judged with time.

Fraizer Campbell has noted Kai Rooney’s encouraging progress after appearances above his age group for United’s under-18 and under-23 sides. He said it would be a special occasion for the club and Rooney family should Kai eventually wear the first-team shirt, particularly given Wayne Rooney’s enduring technical quality, competitiveness and drive.

Wes Brown believes Kai’s development must be assessed on his own terms rather than through his father’s status. Brown said the young forward will need to work hard, keep learning and make the most of any chance that comes his way, while recognising that carrying the Rooney name may at times have made his path more difficult.

First-team focus turns to European and derby fixtures

United remain committed to maintaining a pathway from the academy to the first team, but Gabriel and Rooney are not expected to be accelerated solely because of the attention surrounding them.

Carrick’s immediate focus is on United’s return to Champions League action against Sabah, followed by Sunday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City. Those fixtures will dictate the short-term senior agenda, while the club continue to monitor the development of their highly rated academy forwards.
