Manchester United Eye Morgan Gibbs-White as Bruno Fernandes Successor

Manchester United are considering the long-term succession plan for captain Bruno Fernandes, with Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White widely regarded as a potential fit should the Portuguese playmaker eventually leave Old Trafford.

Why United must plan beyond Fernandes

Fernandes remains central to United’s present plans. The Portugal international has carried much of the creative responsibility during difficult periods for the club, while his output has not diminished despite entering his thirties. He registered 21 assists in the Premier League last season and has opened the current campaign with a hat-trick.

United want to agree a new deal with their captain, but no extension has yet been completed. Even if fresh terms are finalised, the club will eventually need to replace one of its most influential attacking players.

Gibbs-White has emerged as one of the names linked to that challenge. A lifelong United supporter, the England international would be a natural candidate to consider if Old Trafford make an approach. He is also an important figure at Forest, where he has regularly worn the captain’s armband and built a strong connection with supporters at the City Ground.

Cole highlights Gibbs-White’s Forest importance

Former United forward Andy Cole believes Gibbs-White’s performances will continue to draw attention, while warning that Forest have every reason to resist a sale.

“That would be a question for the Manchester United hierarchy,” Cole said when asked whether Gibbs-White could follow Fernandes at United. “He was outstanding for Nottingham Forest last season. He could have moved then, including to Tottenham, but that move did not happen.

“If he continues to work and produce performances, interest from clubs will take care of itself. Forest will not want to lose him, because he is so important to them.”

Cole, who finished his playing career with Forest and was part of United’s Treble-winning side in 1999, has followed the midfielder closely. He feels Gibbs-White has developed significantly since arriving from Wolves four years ago.

“In that role, you need imagination, and he certainly has it,” Cole added. “He began adding goals late last season, which was important in keeping Forest in the Premier League. He wants possession, looks to make chances and tries to arrive in the area to score. Those are the demands of that position.

“His form at the end of last season was very good. He should keep working and playing at that level. Personally, I felt he was unfortunate not to make England’s World Cup squad after the form he showed in that period.”

Thomas Tuchel left Gibbs-White out of England’s 2026 World Cup selection, but the midfielder has returned to the scoresheet this season. He is operating in a reshaped Forest side now led by Oliver Glasner.

Forest’s ability to keep their key player remains uncertain

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has set ambitious targets for the club, and Gibbs-White remains a leading part of those plans. Whether that project can withstand interest from Manchester United, particularly if Fernandes’ situation changes, remains unresolved.
