Luis de la Fuente recalls Gavi injury as Spain prepare for Nations League
Spain begin the season’s first international window with UEFA Nations League duties ahead, carrying the confidence of reigning world champions but also the memory of the injury that shook Luis de la Fuente’s squad: Gavi’s serious knee problem in 2023.
Spain turn attention to Nations League
A sizeable Barcelona contingent is set to be involved with La Roja as the national side return to competitive action. Spain’s recent global success has established high expectations around De la Fuente’s group, yet the manager has identified Gavi’s absence as the most difficult period of his time in charge.
Reflecting on the Barcelona midfielder’s long rehabilitation, De la Fuente described the emotional impact on a squad that viewed Gavi as far more than simply another selection option.
“Gavi’s injury affected everyone,” De la Fuente said. “It felt painful because we were losing somebody very close to us through an accident.”
A dressing-room response that stayed with De la Fuente
De la Fuente, 63, recalled the reaction among the Spain players when Gavi suffered the setback, saying the atmosphere inside the dressing room underlined the midfielder’s standing in the group.
He said the squad’s response was “horrifying” to witness, with players gathering around Gavi to embrace and support him. The manager described the moment as deeply moving.
- Gavi sustained the major knee injury in 2023.
- He has completed his recovery and returned to playing.
- A further setback last season has added to the challenge of rebuilding his rhythm.
- Spain now hope he can re-establish himself as an important figure during the Nations League campaign.
Barcelona competition limits Gavi’s minutes
Although Gavi is available again, his return at Barcelona has not yet brought regular starts under Hansi Flick. Competition in midfield has left the Spain international largely restricted to substitute appearances as he works towards full match sharpness.
Pedri remains a settled starter, while Rodri’s summer arrival has increased the options available to Flick. Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo have also been in strong form, making the route back into the starting side more difficult for Gavi.
The 22-year-old must now make the most of each opportunity at Camp Nou. Consistent performances and a sustained run of fitness would strengthen his case at club level and help him reclaim a central role for Spain under De la Fuente.
