Lionel Messi Set for Argentina Farewell Appearance Against Benin
Argentina have named Lionel Messi in their squad for the first international window after the 2026 World Cup, with the former captain set to receive a farewell appearance against Benin at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium on October 6.
Why Messi’s return matters for Argentina
Messi had announced his international retirement, but accepted an invitation to take part in a final occasion with the national team. Argentine Football Association president Chiqui Tapia said the federation plans to invite the players from Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, together with their families, to join the tribute.
The Benin match is intended to give supporters a final opportunity to see Messi represent Argentina in a special setting. Tapia described it as an unforgettable night for the national team’s followers and a farewell for the player he called the world’s best.

Lionel Scaloni’s selection combines established names with a group of younger players making their way in European football. Román Vega of Zenit, Roma pair Matías Soulé and Santiago Castro, Fiorentina midfielder Franco Mastantuono, and Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni are among the fresh inclusions.
Agustín Giay, now at Palmeiras, is back in the group, as is Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi. Balerdi missed the previous World Cup because of a muscle problem and has been recalled for the first post-tournament fixtures.
Argentina will be without Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Almada, Thiago Almada and Nicolás Otamendi. The absences stem from suspensions and retirements, with Otamendi no longer available after ending his international career.
The three-match programme replaces a proposed China tour that was cancelled after Messi’s original retirement decision. Bolivia provide familiar South American opposition before Burkina Faso and Benin arrive for the two remaining matches of the window.
Scaloni contract remains to be settled
While the October games will begin Argentina’s next cycle, Scaloni’s longer-term position has not yet been resolved. His current deal expires in December, and the AFA are seeking to retain the coach beyond that date.
