Jordynn Dudley Brace Sends Gotham FC Back to NWSL Playoffs
Gotham FC secured a fourth consecutive NWSL playoff appearance with a dramatic 2-1 victory over North Carolina Courage in Cary, while rookie Jordynn Dudley’s first professional brace kept the defending champions in control of the Shield race.
Dudley had not scored in the regular season since May 31, but delivered at the decisive moment for Gotham. Her second goal came in stoppage time as she turned in Rose Lavelle’s header to settle the match. Gotham now have 51 points from their campaign and, with five fixtures still to play, hold a five-point advantage over second-placed Washington Spirit.
North Carolina remain seventh despite Ashley Sanchez’s league-leading return of 19 goals. The Courage are still in the playoff positions, but have little margin for error as teams below them continue to close in.
Washington and San Diego hold their places near the top
Washington responded emphatically to its previous defeat against Boston Legacy, beating Chicago Stars FC 3-0 to remain second on 46 points. Trinity Rodman opened the scoring with her 11th goal of the season before assisting Tamara Bolt for her first NWSL goal.
Rodman’s contribution also brought her level with the NWSL single-season record of nine game-winning goal contributions, underlining her importance to the Spirit’s title and playoff ambitions.
San Diego Wave moved into third after a 2-0 win against Kansas City Current. An own goal put the Wave ahead before Kennedy Wesley struck in the 91st minute to confirm the result.
Kansas City, eighth, remain on the final side of the playoff line, but the defeat highlighted their precarious position. The Current conceded through an own goal and again in stoppage time, leaving a talented squad needing a stronger finish to the season.
Portland and Denver strengthen their cases
Portland Thorns produced one of the weekend’s most emphatic results, beating Orlando Pride 4-1. Four different Thorns players scored after the side’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Chicago, lifting Portland to fifth on 42 points, level with fourth-placed Utah Royals.
Orlando fell behind inside three minutes and conceded a penalty before half-time. The Pride need to put together more victories if they are to remain in the postseason conversation.
Denver Summit also boosted their prospects in their inaugural season by overcoming Seattle Reign 2-1. Delanie Sheehan scored before the interval and Tash Flint added another after the restart, with Denver holding off Seattle’s late push.
Brittany Ratcliffe scored one minute after entering as a substitute for her fourth goal of the season, but Seattle could not find an equaliser. The Reign are ninth with 37 points, while Denver are 10th on 35, only two points behind their rivals and firmly involved in the race.
Angel City won 3-0 away to Utah, with Ally Sentnor converting a penalty to set the visitors on their way. The Royals played the final hour with nine players and eventually could not prevent Angel City from adding further goals. Utah remain fourth with 42 points.
Playoff pressure builds in the middle
The congested standings leave several clubs needing results over the remaining matches. North Carolina are seventh, Kansas City eighth, Seattle ninth and Denver 10th, while Portland’s win has improved its own position in fifth.
Bay FC kept its fading playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Racing Louisville, completing a season sweep after winning both meetings by the same scoreline. It was Bay’s seventh victory of the season, though further wins will be required to sustain a challenge for the postseason.
Racing held Bay scoreless during the opening half but conceded twice after the break. The loss left Louisville 15th and marked a 16th defeat of the season.
Houston Dash moved to 12th on 29 points by beating Boston Legacy 2-1. Boston had levelled after going behind in the first half, but Houston restored its advantage to take all three points in Rhode Island. The result prevented Boston from building on its surprise result the previous weekend.
Chicago eliminated despite front-office change
Chicago’s 3-0 defeat to Washington confirmed elimination from playoff contention. The Stars are bottom of the league with 17 points and have now lost 18 matches this season.
The result came during a significant week off the field for Chicago. Vlatko Andonovski has joined as chief soccer officer, while Jameese Joseph has departed for Utah Royals in an intra-league transfer that could be worth up to $840,000.
Despite those developments, Chicago face a difficult conclusion to the campaign after their hopes of extending the season were ended by the Spirit.
