Jordan Henderson Stars as Chelsea Hit Five Past Bournemouth
Jordan Henderson marked his Chelsea home debut with a free-kick goal inside two minutes and an assist for Morgan Rogers as Xabi Alonso’s side swept Bournemouth aside in a five-goal display at Stamford Bridge.
Quick facts
- Henderson scored early from a free-kick after discussions with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.
- The midfielder said he had worked on set-pieces with coach Austin MacPhee at Cobham.
- It was Henderson’s first home appearance after a summer injury delayed his introduction.
- He also set up Rogers during Chelsea’s fast start against Bournemouth.
- Henderson highlighted Chelsea’s collective defensive work as the basis for the result.
The experienced midfielder was joined over the ball by Palmer and Rogers, but said the coaching staff’s faith in his recent training form gave him the authority to take responsibility. MacPhee had overseen repeated practice sessions during the previous week or two at Cobham.
Henderson said Rogers was initially reluctant to give up the set-piece, before allowing him to take it. Palmer then asked which corner they would be celebrating in if the attempt went in, with Henderson selecting the right side before delivering the finish.
The goal made an immediate impression on an afternoon that carried particular significance for Henderson. His summer injury had kept him waiting for a Stamford Bridge appearance, and he described the occasion as a major personal moment alongside the importance of Chelsea’s result.
Chelsea’s attacking line of Rogers, Palmer and Joao Pedro again supplied the threat in the final third, but Henderson reserved particular praise for their contribution out of possession. He said their pressing and willingness to regain the ball high up the pitch gave the midfield and defence greater protection.
Henderson also pointed to the team’s concentration, defensive discipline and transition work after the early surge. Bournemouth were unable to establish a route back into the match, with Chelsea’s organisation without the ball creating the platform for their attacking players to exploit space on the break.
He said the forwards had the pace, power, skill and finishing to punish any opponent once Chelsea recovered possession. For Henderson, however, their work rate was as important as the goals that defined a convincing home performance.
