JJ Gabriel Stops Training as Manchester United Future Dispute Escalates
Manchester United’s hopes of retaining JJ Gabriel have suffered a significant setback after the 15-year-old stopped training with the club amid a dispute over his pathway to the first team and the terms for opening scholarship discussions.
What changed for Manchester United
Gabriel has not reported for training since leaving the club shortly before United’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton on Sept. 16. He had been expected to make his competitive senior debut in that match, but his registration was withdrawn after a disagreement over playing time.
His representatives wanted commitments that Gabriel would receive at least 20 minutes in each of three fixtures — against Sabah FK, Brighton and Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Oct. 25 — before negotiations began on a scholarship agreement.
The forward turns 16 on Tuesday and would have been eligible to sign a pre-agreement from Oct. 6. Relations between the parties remain strained, despite Gabriel appearing in United’s squad photograph released on Monday. That picture was taken almost a month earlier and does not indicate that a settlement has been reached.
Gabriel’s camp believe assurances previously given by United have not been met. The club, meanwhile, maintain that they have sought to provide a clear route into senior football and have made repeated attempts to check on the player’s welfare since he ceased attending training.
Competition context
Gabriel made a first-team appearance in a summer friendly against Atlético Madrid, but he was not included in United’s Champions League squad. United had also sought to support his rapid progression by assigning senior-level coaches and specialist staff to his development.
The club accepted Gabriel’s request to wear No. 77 this season and applied to the Premier League for permission to use “Gabriel JR” on his shirt. United did not sanction him after he missed a week of academy pre-season training before joining the first-team group, taking the view that he was not solely responsible for that absence.
- United believe Old Trafford remains the strongest environment for Gabriel’s long-term development.
- There is internal concern that the teenager is not sufficiently involved in decisions affecting his career.
- Officials feel those around him, including family members, have placed too much emphasis on record-breaking milestones rather than gradual development.
Several leading European clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, have been connected with a possible move. United have not received a formal approach and are prepared to consider legal action should evidence emerge that another club has contacted Gabriel in breach of the relevant regulations.
What is scheduled next
The immediate decision is whether Gabriel and United can reopen talks once he becomes eligible to enter a pre-agreement. At present, the prospect of him leaving is increasing, with no indication that he will return to training before that issue is resolved.
United’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Oct. 25 had been one of the matches cited in the requested playing-time condition. Unless the disagreement is settled, the club will instead need to plan for the possibility of losing one of their most highly rated academy forwards without securing his long-term commitment.
