Inter Rue Costly Errors as Real Madrid Claim Champions League Win

Inter began their Champions League league-phase campaign with a frustrating defeat in Madrid, conceding twice from costly errors despite controlling much of the contest against Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappe capitalised after Curtis Jones misplaced a pass, while Federico Valverde punished goalkeeper Josep Martinez after catching him in possession, giving the home side a two-goal advantage.

Inter control possession but pay for early errors

The Nerazzurri had lengthy spells on the ball and sought to dictate the tempo in the Spanish capital, finishing with 61 per cent possession and almost twice as many completed passes as Madrid. Their command of territory, however, did not translate into the goals required to overturn the deficit.

Madrid were ruthless when opportunities arrived. Mbappe struck after Jones’s loose pass, before Valverde added another when Martinez was dispossessed. Those two moments left Inter chasing the game against a side able to threaten quickly in transition.

Lautaro identifies decisive moments

Captain Lautaro Martinez said Inter’s display showed they could compete with one of Europe’s leading teams, but accepted that mistakes are punished severely at Champions League level.

“In this competition, small details make the difference and errors cost you,” Lautaro said. “We began well, had possession and controlled the ball, but making two mistakes so early for their goals made the match much harder. Madrid are a top-level team, yet Inter showed character and determination here.”

The Argentine also pointed to the contrast between Madrid’s efficiency and Inter’s failure to take the openings they created. Madrid’s counter-attacks remained dangerous because of their pace in forward areas, while Courtois repeatedly denied the visitors.

“It is disappointing because we only really allowed them counter-attacks, but they have two very fast players,” he said. “We created chances and did not use them. Courtois is among the best goalkeepers in the world, but we must become better in front of goal as well.”

Half-time adjustment creates wider openings

Inter found central areas crowded by Madrid’s back four during the first half. Lautaro said the visitors altered their movement after the interval, with a greater emphasis on attacking down the flanks, and that the change produced more space and helped create their goal.

“There was little room through the middle against their four-man defence, so we needed to use the wings more,” he said. “We changed some movements at half-time and found many spaces, including for the goal. We can leave with our heads up because we matched a great Madrid team.”

Champions League ambition remains unchanged

The opening setback does not alter Inter’s objectives for the revamped league phase. Lautaro insisted that a club of Inter’s stature must enter every competition intending to challenge for the trophy, including the Champions League.

“Real Madrid will be among the teams competing to win the Champions League, and so will we because that is our aim,” Lautaro said. “When you wear this shirt, every competition has to be a target.”
