India Prepare to Host Ancelotti’s Brazil in Historic Kolkata Friendly
Brazil will play a senior international in India for the first time when Carlo Ancelotti’s side meet the hosts in Kolkata on Saturday, with Khalid Jamil asking his players to put admiration aside once the match begins.
What changed for the club
India’s national side face one of the most high-profile fixtures in their recent history, while Brazil bring a squad led by Ancelotti to a country where the Seleção have long held a special place among supporters.
Ancelotti and Jamil shared a warm embrace during the pre-match media appearance, but both camps made clear that the occasion will become competitive at kick-off. Jamil, who was confirmed as India’s permanent head coach in August 2025 after previously guiding Aizawl to the I-League title, wants his team to remain focused for the full 90 minutes.
“They are the best team. They are known as the best of the best,” Jamil said, while maintaining that India must not approach the game as spectators.
Defender Anwar Ali identified composure as the central requirement against Brazil’s attacking quality. “Everyone knows how Brazil play,” he said. “So, we just have to keep calm in the field and deal with the pressure.”
- Brazil are fifth in the FIFA rankings.
- India are ranked 138th.
- The match is Brazil’s first senior men’s international played on Indian soil.
Competition context
The Kolkata fixture is a landmark occasion rather than a competitive tournament match, but it provides India with a significant test of their progress against five-time World Cup winners.
Ancelotti said Brazil had been struck by the local enthusiasm for the national team, built over generations who followed players including Pelé, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. The Italy-born coach said his squad intended to reward that support with a strong display.
“It is an honour for us to be here with the national team,” Ancelotti said. “We know how much this region loves the national team and football. We are happy to be here to play against India and show the quality of our players.”
Brazil defender Marquinhos also described the reception in Kolkata as a major source of encouragement for the visitors, calling the opportunity a “golden” one and saying it gave the group substantial motivation.
For India, the task is to produce a disciplined defensive showing in a packed stadium and use the meeting with elite opposition as a benchmark for the national programme.
What is scheduled next
Brazil will conclude their India visit with Saturday’s match in Kolkata before returning to competitive commitments. Ancelotti’s side will seek an entertaining performance for a crowd eager to see the five-time world champions in person.
India’s immediate objective is to manage Brazil’s pressure, stay organised and make the historic occasion count as a practical measure of the team’s level under Jamil.
