Haaland’s Double Fires Manchester City Past Porto in Champions League Opener
Manchester City began their Champions League league-phase campaign with a 2-0 win away to Porto on Tuesday, with Erling Haaland scoring both goals at Estadio do Dragao.

The victory gave Enzo Maresca’s side three points from their opening European fixture and maintained their unbeaten start to the season. City have now won four successive matches in all competitions.
Haaland put City ahead with a controlled header before adding a second from close range late in the second half. The Norway striker’s double took him to 36 Champions League goals for the club, drawing him level with Sergio Aguero as City’s leading scorer in the competition.
He reached that total in 40 European appearances for City.
Haaland on City’s response in Porto
Porto produced a demanding home environment and periods of pressure, particularly after City’s second-half goal, but Haaland felt the visitors had done enough to establish control before the interval.
“It was a difficult fight, man against man,” Haaland said. “They are a top team and they play very good football. With the pressure on us, we had to perform on the biggest stage, and that is what we did.”
He added that City had created enough opportunities to score more before Porto pushed forward for a spell after the break. “They put us under pressure for about 25 minutes, but we got through it and then finished the game,” he said.
For Haaland, the importance of the result extended beyond a strong start to the league phase. “These are matches we need to win,” he said. “In the Champions League, if you do not win, pressure comes quickly and you do not know what can happen.”
Standards remain high ahead of derby
Haaland said the expectation inside the City squad remains unchanged regardless of venue or opposition, insisting that players must continue to demand more of one another.
“At Manchester City, you have to win matches and trophies,” he said. “We have to demand a lot from each other.”
The striker also hoped Maresca would be satisfied with the display, given the difficulty of winning in Porto. “We won away in a tough game,” Haaland said. “The atmosphere was incredible at times. I hope he is happy.”
City now return to Premier League action for this weekend’s Manchester derby against Manchester United, with Haaland’s scoring form set to be central as Maresca’s team seek to protect their perfect opening run.
