Haaland’s Controversial Goal Seals 10-Man Man City Derby Win at United
Manchester City extended their flawless Premier League opening to four matches with a fiercely contested derby win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, despite playing most of the contest a man short following Phil Foden’s first-half dismissal.
Erling Haaland scored the only goal on the hour, although the strike became the centre of an extraordinary refereeing dispute. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before a prolonged VAR intervention reversed the on-field decision and awarded City the lead.
The Premier League Match Centre stated that Haaland had been onside and that Enzo Fernandez, although standing in an offside position, had not touched the ball. However, refereeing officials later acknowledged to Manchester United representatives that the goal ought not to have counted.

City’s fourth consecutive league victory has also set a new divisional benchmark. They have now begun a Premier League season with four wins from four on seven occasions, more than any other club; Chelsea are next on four such starts. The statistic does not guarantee a title, however, as City converted only two of their previous six perfect four-game openings into championships, in 2012 and 2024.
With 115 Premier League charges still hanging over the club away from the pitch, City remain focused on their attempt to regain the title after winning six league crowns across the past decade. The result at Old Trafford underlined their ability to manage difficult circumstances, but Enzo Maresca will have to plan for the next fixtures without Foden, who will serve a suspension after his straight red card.
