Haaland Hits Double as Manchester City Open Champions League With Porto Win

Manchester City began their Champions League campaign with a controlled win at Porto, led by Erling Haaland’s two goals. After scoring the weekend winner against Coventry, the Norwegian again made the difference, heading City in front before adding a composed second finish.

What changed for the club

Haaland’s double moved him to 36 Champions League goals in 40 appearances for City, continuing a prolific start to the season. City had arrived on the back of three consecutive Premier League victories and imposed themselves immediately in Portugal.

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa limited the damage in the first half. He made sharp stops from Haaland on two occasions and also denied Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo. City nevertheless controlled possession and territory, while Ayyoub Bouaddi produced an encouraging midfield display on his first senior start for the club.

Gianluigi Donnarumma had little to do at the other end. Porto did not manage a shot in the opening 45 minutes and, although Alan Varela bent one effort narrowly off target and William Gomes also missed the goal, the City goalkeeper was not required to make a save.

Competition context

The result gives City an early boost as they pursue another European run after being knocked out by Real Madrid in each of the previous three seasons. Their objective is to win the competition again for the first time since the Treble campaign of 2023.

For Porto, the defeat interrupted an excellent domestic opening under Francesco Farioli. They had won each of their first five Liga Portugal matches, but could not sustain that form against City.
