Guardiola to Attend Man City’s PSG Clash Amid Financial Rules Appeal
Pep Guardiola is expected to return to the Etihad Stadium on October 14, with the former Manchester City manager planning to attend the Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain as the club begins its appeal against findings over alleged Premier League financial-rule breaches.
What changed for the club
Guardiola left the City post at the end of last season and was succeeded by Enzo Maresca, but the 20-trophy manager remains closely aligned with the club during a difficult period. He is currently on a sabbatical in Barcelona and has indicated to senior City figures that he wants to stand alongside the club and its supporters.
An independent commission has found City guilty of charges concerning Premier League financial regulations covering the period from 2009 to 2018. Much of Guardiola’s decade-long, trophy-laden spell fell within that timeframe, placing his record at the club under renewed attention.
City deny wrongdoing and have lodged a formal appeal. In their response released on Friday, the club said the commission’s opinion contained significant mistakes in law, principle and fact, and maintained that evidence supports each part of its case.
The club added that it would follow the legal process and could not make further comment while proceedings remain unresolved.
Guardiola has repeatedly backed City’s leadership, saying during his time in charge that club executives had assured him the rules had not been broken. In a message posted on X this week, he reaffirmed his support for the club, its owner, chairman, Ferran Soriano, players, staff, Maresca and supporters, insisting that City would come through the situation together.
Competition context
Maresca now has to prepare City for a major European tie while the appeal continues away from the pitch. The PSG fixture will bring a leading continental opponent to Manchester at a moment when the squad and fanbase are dealing with the consequences of the commission’s verdict.
Guardiola’s anticipated presence would be a visible show of support for his successor and the wider club. His standing at City was built across a decade in which he won 20 trophies, following previous managerial spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
The legal case will continue in parallel with City’s season, but Maresca’s immediate task is to keep the players focused on results. A Champions League win over PSG would offer City a timely lift amid the off-field uncertainty.
