Ferdinand and Enrique urge Premier League to revisit titles after Man City verdict

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and ex-Liverpool full-back Jose Enrique have called for past Premier League titles to be reassessed after Manchester City were found guilty on all but one of 115 financial misconduct charges. Neither player will decide any sanction, and the league has not yet confirmed whether historical results or honours will be altered.

Former rivals raise title claims

Ferdinand played for United in the 2011-12 campaign, when City secured the title in dramatic fashion and United ended the season second. After the verdict, he suggested that the outcome could add to his collection of league winners’ medals.

Posting on X, Ferdinand wrote: “Another Premier League medal to be added to the cabinet.”

Enrique made a similar appeal from a Liverpool perspective. The Spaniard was part of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side that finished second in 2013-14, two points behind City. That season included Liverpool’s damaging home defeat to Chelsea during the run-in.

Enrique shared an edited image of himself cleaning the Premier League trophy and said he expected a medal to follow. His message read: “Is already here!!! Thank you premier league and send me the medal soon too.”

No punishment confirmed by Premier League

Possible sanctions under discussion range from substantial financial penalties to points deductions, while relegation has also been raised as a potential outcome. No final sporting consequence has been imposed.

Manchester City have issued a statement while considering their legal position, including the prospect of challenging the verdict.

Current campaign continues

City’s off-field case has not prevented a strong start to the 2026-27 Premier League season. They are top of the division after winning each of their opening five matches.

Liverpool are sixth with two victories, while United sit 12th after recording one win. The legal process and any eventual Premier League sanction will determine whether the calls from Ferdinand, Enrique and other former players lead to changes in the record books.
