Ethan Ampadu Set to Lead Leeds United Against Manchester United
Ethan Ampadu will again be central to Leeds United’s plans when they face Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, with the club captain expected to take on a pivotal midfield role against Bruno Fernandes. Leeds took four points from the fixture last season and Daniel Farke will hope his side can add to the pressure surrounding United manager Michael Carrick.
From Exeter record-breaker to Leeds captain
Ampadu’s senior career began unusually early at Exeter City, his home-town club. He made his first-team debut aged 15 years, 10 months and 26 days, setting a Devon record previously held by former Arsenal forward Cliff Bastin.
His emergence quickly drew attention from leading Premier League sides, with Chelsea securing his signature. Opportunities in west London were limited, however, as he made 12 competitive appearances for the club and only one in the Premier League.
- Ampadu joined Chelsea after breaking through at Exeter City as a teenager.
- He gained further first-team experience on loan at RB Leipzig, Sheffield United, Venezia and Spezia.
- Leeds completed a permanent £7 million, or $9 million, deal for him in 2023.
- He was named Leeds captain within a year of arriving in West Yorkshire.
Championship success and Premier League stability
The Wales international led Leeds to the Championship title in 2025 before helping the club retain its Premier League place last season. Now 26, he has become one of the most dependable members of Farke’s squad when available, offering cover at centre-back as well as in central midfield.
His standing at Elland Road is a sharp contrast to an earlier stage of his career, when there were doubts over whether a highly rated prospect would fulfil his potential. At Leeds, his consistent level and leadership have made him a supporters’ favourite.
Kilgallon praises Ampadu’s influence
Former Leeds defender Matthew Kilgallon said Ampadu’s difficult loan spell at Sheffield United had raised questions, but believes the player has developed into an outstanding captain for the Whites.
- Kilgallon said Ampadu now leads by example and rarely delivers below a “seven out of 10” performance.
- He highlighted the midfielder-defender’s ability to play in either role, as well as his tackling and recovery runs.
- Kilgallon credited Ampadu with helping to set standards in the Leeds dressing room, both during matches and away from the pitch.
- While noting jokes about his limited goal return, he said Ampadu’s less visible defensive work has been especially valuable.
Kilgallon described Ampadu as Leeds’ standout performer so far this season, despite the competition for places in a squad that has produced several strong individual displays.
Manchester United test awaits
Leeds return to league action on Sunday against Manchester United, who travel across the Pennines with Carrick under mounting scrutiny. Farke’s side will seek to repeat the resilience that earned them four points from the two meetings last term.
Ampadu’s contest with Fernandes could shape the match. Leeds will rely on their captain’s intensity, positional flexibility and authority in midfield as they attempt to control a potentially open contest at Elland Road.
