Estevao Told to Fight for Chelsea Place Amid Transfer Speculation

Estevao faces a significant second-season test at Chelsea after a change of manager and system left one of Brazil’s brightest young attackers on the margins of the Premier League side.

The forward arrived in England from Palmeiras shortly after turning 18, carrying the “Messinho” label and considerable expectations as a leading prospect from Brazilian football. His pace, close control and positive manner made an immediate impression in west London, and he scored eight goals in his first campaign before a hamstring problem brought it to an early end. The injury also ended his hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup.

Having returned to fitness, Estevao had been expected to take another step forward. Instead, Xabi Alonso’s appointment has altered the conditions around him. Chelsea are operating with a three-player defence and without conventional wide forwards, while Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have occupied the two No. 10 positions. Estevao has consequently played only 23 minutes in the league this season.

Need for a broader game

Former Chelsea striker Cole believes the current shape is the principal obstacle, but feels Estevao must improve without possession if he is to earn a regular place either at Stamford Bridge or elsewhere.

“The system does not really fit him at present,” Cole said. “Alonso appears to want a more defensively responsible player on the right, although you cannot be certain how it would work unless Estevao is given an opportunity. So far, there has been little indication that he is close to starting matches.”

Cole added that the teenager may not yet have done enough in training to force his way into the side, stressing that defensive application will be essential alongside the attacking gifts that are already evident. He said Estevao’s quality on the ball is beyond doubt, but that the off-ball side of his football remains a developmental area.

“If the coaches can bring him up to the required level away from the ball, Chelsea will have a very good player,” Cole said. “Alonso will understand the talent is there, and the club will need depth if it is to move forward. The key is making sure Estevao remains content while he learns.”

Interest from clubs able to offer greater involvement has already been suggested, with regular minutes likely to be central to Estevao’s thinking as 2027 approaches. Chelsea, however, have protection against an immediate exit: his long-term deal runs until the summer of 2033.

The club are unlikely to readily sacrifice a player of his potential, even if his present role is limited. The challenge for Chelsea and Estevao will be finding a route to meaningful opportunities before a young forward who wants to play begins to consider the alternatives available to him.
