Crystal Palace Begin Contract Talks With Captain Dean Henderson
Crystal Palace have opened formal talks with Dean Henderson over a new contract as they look to retain their captain and first-choice goalkeeper beyond the final two years of his existing deal.
The 29-year-old joined Palace from Manchester United for around £20 million in 2023, signing a five-year agreement. He has since made 119 appearances in all competitions, recording 38 clean sheets, and the club’s move to discuss an extension underlines his standing at Selhurst Park.
Henderson’s rise at Palace
- Henderson initially had to compete for the goalkeeper’s shirt after arriving in south London, but established himself as Palace’s undisputed No 1.
- His emergence contributed to Sam Johnstone’s departure for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £10 million transfer two years ago.
- Nottingham Forest, where Henderson had previously enjoyed a successful loan spell, explored a move during the latest summer window. Palace rejected the interest and made clear that the goalkeeper would not be sold.
- Following Marc Guehi’s January move to Manchester City, Palace reshaped their leadership group and appointed Henderson as club captain, reflecting his authority and standing within the squad.
Key role in Palace’s trophy success
Henderson has been central to Palace’s recent run of historic successes. In the 2024-25 FA Cup final, he saved Omar Marmoush’s penalty in a decisive moment as the club secured the trophy.
He then helped Palace win the 2025 FA Community Shield before playing a major part in the side’s run to the UEFA Conference League title last season. Those performances further strengthened his reputation as a goalkeeper capable of producing in major matches.
Injury update and upcoming fixtures
The contract discussions come while Henderson works his way back from an ankle problem suffered in Palace’s final pre-season friendly. He nevertheless started each of the club’s first three Premier League games, with the recent defeat to Ipswich Town the only match he has missed so far.
Palace expect him to be unavailable for Thursday’s home Europa League opener against Lech Poznan and Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leeds United, their final fixture before the international break.
The Eagles have made a difficult start in the league, sitting 16th after losing three of their opening four matches and taking only one win. Securing Henderson’s long-term future would provide an important measure of continuity as the side seeks to recover its domestic form while beginning another European campaign.
