Carlos Espi’s Late Winner Sends Real Madrid Level With Barcelona

Real Madrid survived a late scare at Elche on Tuesday, recovering from a second-half collapse to claim a dramatic 3-2 La Liga victory through Carlos Espi’s 91st-minute winner. The result took Madrid level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table, although the Catalan side can restore their advantage against Racing Santander on Wednesday.

Madrid rescue victory after Elche comeback

1. Arda Guler gave Real Madrid the lead when his free-kick took a deflection off Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro and crossed the line.
2. Kylian Mbappe then made it 2-0 after Yan Diomande delivered an accurate cross for the French forward.
3. Elche responded strongly after the interval and scored twice late in the match to bring the home side level.
4. With a draw offering little value in the title race, Jose Mourinho made an aggressive attacking reshuffle, sending on Espi and Endrick.
5. The closing line-up included Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Diomande, Brahim Diaz, Espi and Endrick, leaving Madrid with considerable attacking numbers but reduced defensive protection.

Mourinho accepts late gamble

Mourinho said the final substitutions were a calculated risk, with Madrid prepared to expose themselves in pursuit of victory rather than settle for a point. He explained that his side could easily have been beaten after committing so many players forward, but felt that the circumstances required a decisive response.

The Madrid manager also highlighted Espi’s growing contribution. The forward has become an increasingly useful option from the bench this season, though Mourinho acknowledged the difficulty of fitting him into a side built around Mbappe. He described Mbappe as an exceptional player and suggested that using both forwards together is not straightforward.

Concern over missed chances

Despite the comeback win, Mourinho was dissatisfied with Madrid’s earlier failure to put the match beyond reach. He said the visitors had several opportunities to turn their two-goal lead into a three- or four-goal margin, but did not take them.

That lack of finishing allowed Elche back into the contest at a difficult away ground. Mourinho nevertheless praised the response after the equaliser, saying the squad reacted well when the match became complicated and found a way to win. He added, with a joke after the final whistle, that Real Madrid matches are rarely dull.

Madrid now wait for Barcelona’s Wednesday meeting with Racing Santander, with the league leaders under pressure to produce a positive result and reclaim sole possession of first place.
