Barcelona Set for Montjuic Return as Camp Nou Roof Work Begins

Barcelona will leave Camp Nou again next season as work begins on the stadium roof, with the first team set to return temporarily to the Montjuic Olympic Stadium. The club’s members have approved a further €510 million (£438m/$584m) funding package for the Espai Barca redevelopment, and officials now expect the permanent return to Camp Nou to take place in January 2028.

What changed for the club

The additional finance was authorised by socios during a weekend vote after construction delays increased the cost and complexity of the project. Barcelona said the new money is required to absorb the financial consequences of delays in delivering the redevelopment.

Ferran Olive, the club treasurer, confirmed that the squad will use Montjuic while major roof installation work is carried out at Camp Nou. The new agreement takes the estimated total cost of the stadium overhaul to close to €2 billion (£1.7bn/$2.3bn).

The funding has two parts:

• €300 million will be used to complete Camp Nou, including the expanded facilities, services and technology added beyond the initial plans.
• €210 million will come through two Media Notes issues worth €105 million apiece. One was issued in July 2026, with the other due in October or November 2026.

Competition context

Barcelona are currently able to host 62,000 supporters at Camp Nou, but the gradual reopening of the third tier is expected to lift that figure to 75,000 during this season. The stadium is planned to reach 95,000 seats when the full homecoming takes place in January 2028.

Capacity is then expected to rise to 105,000 for the 2028-29 campaign. UEFA has already selected the rebuilt ground to host the 2029 Champions League final, giving the project a major European showcase soon after its completion.

What is scheduled next

Barcelona will make Montjuic their temporary home next season while the decisive roof phase is completed. The club’s next financing step is the second €105 million Media Notes issue, scheduled for October or November 2026.

The planned timeline then points to a January 2028 return to Camp Nou, followed by the final capacity expansion for 2028-29 and the Champions League final in 2029.
