Andy Cole Backs Erling Haaland to Stay at Manchester City

Erling Haaland’s long Manchester City contract has done little to quiet speculation over his eventual future, with Barcelona and Real Madrid regularly linked to a forward whose scoring record has made him one of the game’s most valuable players. City have secured the Norway international until 2034, but a move abroad could become a consideration if he seeks a new challenge after collecting the biggest honours in England.

Haaland’s City record continues to rise

Haaland arrived at the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022 for £51 million ($69m), following productive spells with Molde, Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund. The move also took him back to the city where his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, played during his own Premier League career.

• Haaland has scored 167 times in 203 appearances for Manchester City.
• He reached 100 Premier League goals in 111 matches, the quickest anyone has reached that landmark in England’s top division.
• The 26-year-old is now in his fifth campaign at City.
• His value is considered to have risen substantially from the fee paid in 2022, potentially to around four times that figure.

The striker has also strengthened his standing on the international stage after starring for Norway at the 2026 World Cup, bringing further attention from across Europe.

Cole sees no immediate reason to leave

Former City forward Andy Cole believes the decision will ultimately rest with Haaland rather than the length of the deal in place. He said Haaland appears settled in Manchester, enjoying his football and holding an important position within the squad.

Cole said that, when a player is happy and performing in a successful side, there is little incentive to move on. However, he added that only Haaland can determine what he wants physically, mentally and professionally in the years ahead.

Team success over individual milestones

Cole also suggested that Haaland’s apparent lack of interest in personal records is consistent with the outlook required at an elite club. In his view, records are meant to be surpassed, but they should not become the main focus for a player competing for major trophies.

He stressed that individual achievements depend on teammates creating the opportunities to deliver them, and said Haaland’s priority appears to be scoring, winning silverware and contributing to the collective.

Spanish interest remains a potential factor

Former City midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes it would be natural for Haaland to contemplate a different destination after winning the Premier League and Champions League with City. He noted that a long contract gives the club considerable control, but does not necessarily end the possibility of a future approach from Spain.

Haaland has not indicated that he intends to leave City. His father has, however, left open the prospect of a move to Spain at some stage. City will be reluctant to lose their No. 9, while recognising that a player of Haaland’s stature may eventually want a fresh target after a sustained period of success in Manchester.
