Achraf Hakimi to Face 2027 Rape Trial as PSG Career Continues

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi is expected to stand trial in 2027 on a rape accusation dating from February 2023, after exhausting his final legal avenues. Pundit calls for PSG defender to step away

French commentator Poncet has argued that Hakimi should suspend his football career until the case is heard, despite describing himself as a PSG supporter. Speaking on Les Grandes Gueules, he said sporting loyalty should not outweigh personal principles.

“My attachment to PSG cannot come before my values,” Poncet said. “Achraf Hakimi should put his career on pause. There should be time for the trial and for him to defend himself.”

Poncet maintained that the player should step aside now that the legal process has reached the point where a trial cannot be avoided. He compared his position with comments he had previously made regarding Gerard Depardieu, saying he had to apply the same standard consistently.

Poncet also suggested that the prolonged situation could be affecting Hakimi’s form. He pointed to the full-back’s demanding schedule and an uneven World Cup campaign, saying the legal uncertainty may be weighing on him.

“He has not been as good for the last few months, and it must be on his mind,” Poncet said. “After so many appeals, he is still going to court. When every appeal route has been used, you have to go to trial.”

With the hearing not expected until 2027, Hakimi, PSG and Morocco face an extended period in which the player’s on-field responsibilities will continue alongside the forthcoming legal case.
